Fundamentals of Technique with Anne Marsden Thomas

This course will make frequent reference to The New Oxford Organ Method (details in the list of books at the foot of this document).  If you own a copy, please bring it with you.

Tuesday: Pedalling

Bring organ shoes (beginners: buy shoes from www.organmastershoes.com or bring close fitting lightweight outdoor shoes with a smooth, ideally leather, sole and no extended seam around the toe).  Prepared exercises for those who already play the organ:

  1. A pedalling exercise from any of the books listed at the foot of this document
  2. The pedal part of any piece you are currently learning, provided it offers a useful demonstration of your technique

Wednesday: Touch, fingering and footing

Control of attack, duration, release.  Check healthy hands.  Prepared execises:

  1. Any major scale, hands together or separately, in two octaves.
  2. A simple Baroque organ or piano piece of about 16 bars, for example Purcell ‘Air in D minor’ (in Chapter 1 of New Oxford Organ Method).

And, if you like:

Any piece in which you are uncertain how to apply fingering or footing.

Thursday: Practice and performance

Learn how to gain most benefit and enjoyment from your valuable practice time with a range of resources, how to avoid performance nerves and how to improve your sight-reading. Please bring:

  • Any piece which includes a challenge not yet overcome (newcomers to the organ: bring a piano piece which includes a similar challenge).
  • The exercises and pieces introduced earlier in this course.
  • New Oxford Organ Method, if you own a copy.

Friday: Registration

Understand a complex organ console, learn basic registration and how to choose the most effective stops for all your pieces, whatever instrument you are playing.  The class will also cover organ management: how to change manuals, change stops, use the expression pedals.   Bring:

  • Exercises and pieces introduced earlier in this course.
  • Any piece you currently play whose registration poses a challenge.
  • New Oxford Organ Method, if you own a copy.
